Nerf Rail-Mounted Laser Pointer Holder – Twist-Lock Activation

By October 3, 2025October 19th, 20253D Design

This little project started because my 5-year-old decided his Nerf blaster needed a laser. You know how it goes—when you’re five, everything is cooler with a laser beam attached to it. He had one of those small, cheap laser pointers lying around, and he asked if we could mount it onto his Nerf gun. That was all the excuse I needed to fire up the 3D printer.

The challenge was making something that actually clipped onto the Nerf tactical rail without needing screws, glue, or fiddling around. I wanted it to feel like a proper accessory that just snaps on and works. After a bit of tinkering, I came up with this rail-mounted laser holder with a twist-lock mechanism.

Here’s how it works: the pointer slides into the holder, you give it a little twist to lock it in place, and then when you push it forward, it presses its own button to turn on the laser. No electronics, no mods to the pointer itself—it’s just the mount doing all the work. Super simple, but it feels surprisingly slick when you use it.

Designing it turned out to be half the fun. I had to make sure it flexed enough to clip onto the rail but not so much that it would break. We tested a few versions, and my son was the chief “quality control officer”—he got to snap it on and off his blaster and tell me if it “felt right.” Honestly, I think he enjoyed the testing more than the actual laser!

Printing was straightforward in PLA, though PETG would probably last longer if you’re planning some heavy Nerf battles. The laser we used is about 12.5–13 mm in diameter, so if yours is different, you might need to scale the file a little.

At the end of the day, this was one of those projects where the process was just as rewarding as the final piece. My son now has his very own “tactical Nerf laser,” and I got to make something practical and fun on the printer. Plus, nothing beats seeing your kid’s face light up (pun intended) when their crazy idea actually works.

If you want to try it out yourself, the files are up on Printables. I’d love to see how it works on your blaster setups—or if you remix it into something even cooler.

Sometimes the best 3D prints aren’t the complicated ones—they’re the ones that start with a kid saying: “Dad, can we make this?”
